We were looking forward to seeing everyone in Montréal in July 2021, however the safety and well-being of our members is our priority. Based on concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on our community’s ability to travel, the ISTR Board of Directors has agreed to make the ISTR 14th International Conference a fully virtual event. The dates (12 -15 July) currently remain the same, and conference registration will still be required for all attendees and speakers. We consider the current circumstances as an opportunity to innovate an engaging virtual conference that will be rewarding for both presenters and attendees. We will be designing a conference format, schedule and price structure that maximizes the value for our members and will share updates on a regular basis.
As a result of this decision, we have shifted the abstract submission deadline for our new theme, Collective Action and Responsiveness in the Global Context to 30 November 2020. We believe the new and final submission deadline will allow more prospective participants to submit their research — on current issues arising from the pandemic –to the now virtual ISTR2021 Conference.

Civil society plays a crucial part in promoting cosmopolitan ideals of collective responsibility, global citizenship, tolerance, inclusivity, and sustainability. Our virtual conference will consider the roles of NGOs, third sector and civil society organizations, broadly defined, in relation to civil society, state and markets in democratic contexts; challenges and opportunities of advocacy and campaigning in an era of “fake news”; governance, management, adaptation and sustainability of organizations; hybridity, legitimacy and the third sector; models of philanthropy and voluntarism; social movements and political participation in authoritarian and austere times; development and sustainability: the role of civil society; diversity, inequalities and civil society; social economy, social innovation and the third sector, and emerging areas of theory, pedagogy and practice.
More information about our digital platform and virtual format will be posted soon at www.istr.org/Virtual_2021. We are looking forward to receiving your abstract contributions and meeting you virtually at ISTR2021!
